Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

MPs are looking into the UK government's management of a serious disclosure of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to avoid the regime.

Data Disclosure Occurred

A spreadsheet containing their personal data, including names, addresses and occasionally family information, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at British military command in last year.

The incident was discovered months later, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to settle in Britain appeared on social media.

Militant Technology

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that the Taliban lack comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate your precise location. That's precisely what specialized teams accomplished.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They possess all resources.”

Preliminary research submitted to the inquiry suggested that at least 49 family members and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been executed.

A legal restriction concerning the breach was implemented in last year and restricted all details concerning it from media reporting until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she was working with advised Afghan families they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they moved where feasible and switched their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities acquired these details, would cause their location being found,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A argued that government assessment conducted by a former official had been mistaken to conclude that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves their previous employment.”

She detailed disturbing treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“Instances include young kids who have had limbs fractured to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
