Our team is verifying images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
