From Struggling to Imperfect – Are There Any Contenders Truly Desiring to Claim Victory in the Big Game This Season?

No major competition sells equal footing like the NFL: it’s the entire brand. However, after the first ten matchups in this campaign, this doesn't represent a landscape with perfect equilibrium separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Instead, it's a scenario where the majority of teams appear to be sufficient.

NFC Clarity

Within the National Football Conference, at least, there is some clarity. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both standing at seven wins, two losses) look like the most well-rounded squads in the NFL, and delivered blowout wins on Sunday. The 6-2 Eagles even with their challenges still have a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, likewise with Green Bay (5-2-1). The Lions also (six and three), who have been inconsistent on offense and defense and navigating tension on their coaching staff, have shown they're capable of dominating strong franchises. For each of these squads, one can readily put together a Super Bowl path.

AFC Confusion

Turning to the American Football Conference, the playoff picture is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all at 8-2) and Steelers (5-4 record). Take another look. No Chiefs presence. Buffalo is missing. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. Historically strong franchises, featuring the league’s best quarterbacks, display either glaring roster weaknesses or have been hit by injuries.

Parity Mechanics

From certain perspectives, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders in the American Football Conference still feels strange. Aspects of each franchise meet championship standards, yet not completely. If you were asked to lock in your AFC title game selections today, would you confidently select any one of the current division frontrunners?

Team Breakdowns

Indianapolis Colts

First, examining Indianapolis, the signal-caller hasn’t quite reached complete disaster level. But the last two weeks have been worrying. He’s back to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He suffered seven sacks against the Falcons in the weekend game, and endured a five-minute stretch during which he tossed an interception and coughed up the ball thrice. This follows he gave away possessions five times against the Steelers.

Indianapolis' offensive unit excelled during early games because Jones avoided game-changing errors. Taylor along with the blockers ensure Indianapolis remains capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, like their German performance. Yet Jones going back to his historically mistake-heavy play would end any playoff run.

New England Analysis

The Patriots feel relatively comparable. Last season, they were a punchline. Now, they’re the league’s happiest surprise and the strongest squad across the league after seven straight wins. If not for fumbling away a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting at 9–1 with the best record. In the prior year, they appeared aged and sluggish. Now they’re young, fast and unafraid. However, we must acknowledge how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They have faced the least challenging lineup in the league, and flaws have still emerged. The signal-caller has been brought down thirty-five times – the second-most in football – including particular impacts he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing most of the responsibility. Absent adequate signal-calling, Denver cannot intimidate playoff opponents. The Chargers are also contending within their division at 7-2, but the injuries within their blocking corps will create difficulties for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Steelers

And then there’s Pittsburgh, inexplicably frontrunning the Northern division even after suffering 25-10 by the Chargers in the evening game. They have a negative point differential, their defense regularly vanishes, and the QB's current constraints during his career phase continue to show up. They’re 5–4 and holding on, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled to within one game of Pittsburgh, but that it has arrived so quickly is an indictment of the Steelers' uneven performances. The fact Baltimore began the season 1-5 yet still appear capable of division victory is telling about the entire AFC.

Historical Favorites

The Ravens represent a segment of the Big Three – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, who would still strike the greatest concern in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo persistently undermine themselves.

Buffalo Analysis

A week ago, Buffalo was celebrating after beating the Chiefs. This weekend they encountered among the season's worst defeats of the season. They didn't simply fail against Miami; they suffered humiliation, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win over the Bills in more than 1,000 days.
