Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
