New York's next mayor states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his previous Astoria apartment.
With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
