Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Team

England have chosen a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.

Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.

During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to offer some spin while also strengthening the lower order.

But the coach has opted to stick with Bashir, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
