Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.
