Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
