The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a book next month named A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling the period endured behind bars.

This news was made shortly after the former president left prison while he appeals the court ruling for illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to secure election campaign funds linked to the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.

Prison Experience: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, indicating the memoir is more about his reflections during seclusion instead of a broader observation regarding the strained and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“Quiet is absent, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he states. “The din unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, the former leader participated by video link from a room in prison, depicting prison life as draining. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this nightmare manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It has an impact on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, was the first past president of an EU country and the first leader since WWII from France to be incarcerated.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear whether he had time to read and critique the texts he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the famous story, where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

Sarkozy was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a cell of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Guards stayed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted just yogurt while inside worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. He had facilities for self-catering yet he declined, according to reports. Not known is if he will detail meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

The legal representative, who saw him regularly daily during the incarceration, told the release hearing his safety would improve released compared to inside. “He received threats against his life, has heard screaming at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began last month when the judiciary imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to acquire political donations for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and is contesting the ruling, and a fresh trial planned for next spring.
