The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club chase future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
