The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
