Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
