While Swimmers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, heard cracking sounds echoing across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running towards something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of courage in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and paramedics caring for many the injured.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to emerge from the community, with the patrol base beside the scene of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the water to save people in distress.

After the events, comments of gratitude were shared. A social media message shared gratitude for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always triumph over hatred”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion directed at our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the instant the incident started through to late that evening.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate selflessness every day in ensuring our iconic beaches protected for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have observed in the presence of such hatred.”
